Understanding lottery odds

Lottery odds are calculated using combinations — the number of ways to choose your numbers from the available pool without regard to order. For a 6/49 lottery, you're choosing 6 numbers from 49, giving 13,983,816 possible combinations. Each ticket covers exactly one combination.

Bonus balls multiply the complexity dramatically. Powerball's addition of a 1-in-26 bonus ball takes a base odds of roughly 1 in 11 million and stretches it to 1 in 292 million — the bonus ball alone is responsible for most of that difference.

Does buying more tickets help?

Mathematically, yes — but less than you'd think. Buying 10 Powerball tickets improves your odds from 1 in 292 million to 10 in 292 million (1 in 29 million). You'd need to buy roughly 292 million tickets to guarantee a jackpot win, at around $584 million in ticket costs for a prize that's often worth less after taxes.
